Ahmedabad, May 13: The Congress party in Gujarat has reason to cheer. As the election results of the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union (KDCMPU) or Amul dairy declared on Tuesday gave a thumping majority for its sitting chairman and Congress MLA Ramsinh Parmar, who defeated the BJP’s Vipul Patel by winning 10 of 13 seats on the Amul board on Tuesday. Ramsinh Parmar wins cooperative union election for fourth time in a row.
Amul dairy, part of the 17-dairy union Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), is the only milk cooperative union in the state under Congress control. Parmar defeated his rival and BJP candidate Vipul Patel, who is the chairman of Nadiad Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC).
One representative from each milk society has one vote to elect the representatives from 13 blocks, each of them having about a hundred milk societies.The election, where about 1,000 registered voters polled to elect representatives from 13 blocks, was held for a tenure of five years. These blocks cover the milk societies located in Kheda, Anand and two talukas of Mahisagar district. The election was held at the Amul Dairy campus in Anand on Tuesday.
Amul dairy has reported a turnover of Rs 4,000 crore with milk collection of about 32 lakh litres per day at Amul dairy in Anand. The dairy has also started a milk dairy on a trial basis in the US, while in India it is expanding its cheese-making facility.
