Raiganj: The Congress on Friday observed a 12-hour strike in Chopra, a North Dinajpur block rocked by political clashes, to protest the death of a Congress worker.
Normal life got affected in a number of areas of the block, which had on Thursday seen Trinamool and Congress supporters attack each other with bullets and bombs in Chopramari village.
Police had wielded batons to disperse the crowd before two Congress supporters were found at the spot with bullet injuries. A section of Congress leaders had alleged that the cops had opened fire but police officials denied it.
As the news spread, fresh tension sparked in the area. All the parties in opposition, Congress, CPM and BJP, announced that a 12-hour strike would be observed in Chopramari and adjoining areas like Lalbazaar, Ghirnigaon, Lakkhipur and Daspara to protest the death.
Though no fresh violence occurred in Chopra block on Friday, situation heated up at Betbari village under Goalpokhor block of the district.
