Kolkata: As predicted by the Regional Meteorological Centre, dark clouds covered the sky over Kolkata and a brief but heavy downpour started since the afternoon.
The countrywide cumulative rainfall for the overall season from June 1 till September 30 was recorded at 841.3 mm against the normal rains of 887.5 mm.
Increasing the agony of the revellers, the weather office has forecast more rain and thunderstorm in the evening and at night in Kolkata and Nadia,Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, and East Burdwan districts. Districts like Birbhum, East Midnapore and West Midnapore will receive moderate rain. Meanwhile, some places are also facing trouble with water logging.
Earlier this week sudden rains on Thursday had already put a dampener on the festive mood in the city and adjoining districts on Mahashtami of the Durga puja festival as thousands of devotees, dressed in their best, ran helter skelter to protect themselves from getting drenched.
The downpour still continues, the city and areas in vicinity to Kolkata have received the maximum amount of rainfall today. As the festive mood is still on, Durga idols still remains in the pandals and the Durga idol immersion carnival is yet to be take place.
