Purulia: The state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) made the first arrest in connection with the death of Trilochan Mahato, under Balarampur police station area in Purulia on June 30. Mahato’s body was found hanging from a tree at Supurdih village, a kilometer away from the village where he lived.
“We have arrested one Punjabi Mahato, a resident of Supurdih under Balarampur police station area in Purulia, after prolonged interrogation in connection with the murder of Trilochan Mahato,” a senior CID official said.
A case was initiated over a complaint of the deceased’s father Hariram Mahato under section 302 (murder), section 364 (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder) and 120B (criminal conspiracy). Punjabi is a shepherd by profession.
According to CID sources, Trilochan, who was a third year student of History honours in Balarampur College, was allegedly kidnapped on May 29 evening, when he was returning from Balarampur Hattala on his bicycle. His family members and the local police station conducted search throughout the night in all probable places. But their efforts went in vain.
The next day on May 30, he was found hanging from a Sirish Tree at Khudigora jungle, barely a kilometer away from his village. All his belongings like chappal, moneybag, cap, mobile phones and some other articles were found at the place of occurrence, along with his bicycle. The sleuths also recovered two mobile phones and two SIM cards, which were kept concealed at the house of Punjabi Mahato.
“We have sent the seized articles for forensic examination. He will be forwarded to the local court with a prayer for police custody on Monday,” a CID official said. CID is yet to ascertain the real motive behind the murder and believe that there are some more people involved in the crime.
