Chennai: Former Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday asked the NDA Government to release letters written to the British Government on Lalit Modi issue during the UPA rule which will answer the former IPL chief’s accusations against him and the Congress.
He also accused External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj of ‘nepotism’ and abuse of authority in facilitating travel documents for Lalit Modi. He even questioned the government about the steps it has taken to bring back the former IPL chief Lalit Modi to India.
In a series of tweets, the senior Congress leader said the government should release the letters written to the UK Chancellor on the Lalit Modi case in the interest of transparency.
The former home Minister’s reaction came a day after Lalit Modi accused the Congress and Chidambaram of making him a target of ‘political vendetta’ after Congress leader Shashi Tharoor lost his cabinet berth following the IPL scam.
Talking to media persons in Chennai, Chidambaram said accusations made by Modi about the previous Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government using him for political vendetta were “laughable”.
As Finance Minister, Chidambaram had previously asked the British government why it was not taking action against Modi, former IPL chief who had taken refuge in London after he was accused of a wide range of financial impropriety, including money laundering.
