Bolpur: The whole process of appointing a Vice-Chancellor at Visva-Bharati has started a fresh after President Ram Nath Kovind made an earlier selection panel and its recommendations.
Surat Singh, a deputy director in the Union HRD ministry, has written to the central university saying a fresh selection panel will be set up with a representative of the university Court and a nominee each of the Executive Council (EC) and the Visitor. The President, the Visitor, will nominate the head of the committee.
“It is requested to arrange the meetings of the Court and EC of the university at the earliest possible to get one nomination each from the two bodies,” states the letter written by Singh on Wednesday.
Sabuj Kali Sen, the acting VC, had camped in Delhi for three days for clarifications on whether she could continue even after her tenure as a director of the varsity’s Studies of Rural Reconstruction ends on Saturday.
Sen, who had taken charge on February 3 after acting VC Swapan Kumar Datta retired, left Delhi on Friday amid indications that the HRD ministry has sought advice from the law ministry on her continuance. It is learnt that several members of the EC are against Sen’s continuation as acting VC.
If Sen has to step down as acting VC, Asha Mukherjee, the principal of Vidya Bhavan at the varsity, will take over as VC till late March. In that time, the new regular VC may be appointed.
Visva has not had a regular VC since February 2016. It is the only varsity whose Chancellor is the Prime Minister.
