Marilyn Monroe, the sex symbol of the Cine world in America had taken the path of quitting August 5, 1956! The date is marked as the sudden pause of the male fantasy drive of many youths of the 1950s. The American ‘Sex Symbol’ Marilyn Monroe was suddenly a past affair in the lives of many young blood. The final years of Monroe’s life were marked by illness, personal problems, and a reputation for unreliability and being difficult to work with. The circumstances of her death, from an overdose of barbiturates, have been the subject of conjecture. Though officially classified as a “probable suicide”, the possibilities of an accidental overdose or a homicide have not been ruled out.
Another case of an untimely death was none other than the much talked about Vijaylakshmi better known by her stage name Silk Smitha. Vijayalakshmi’s dead body was found hanging from the ceyling fan of her room on September 23, 1996. She was apopular ‘sex drive’ of the male fantasy.Her role as “Silk” in the 1979 Tamil film Vandichakkaram made her a separate genre in the Cine world. She became the most sought-after erotic actress in the early 1980s. On 23 September 1996, she was found dead in her apartment in Chennai, apparently having committed suicide.
Another incident of the extingusishing of the flickering lamp in the celebrated life is Nafisa Joseph. The hot beauty of the nineties was an Indian model and MTV video jockey. She was the winner of Femina Miss India Universe 1997 and was a finalist in the Miss Universe 1997 pageant in Miami. On Nafisa Joseph July 29, 2004 Joseph hanged herself in her flat in Versova. She was to marry businessman Gautam Khanduja in a few weeks’ time. According to her parents, Joseph took the step because her marriage was called off. This was due to Joseph having discovered that Khanduja was still married, although having told her he had been divorced for two years. When confronted, Khanduja refused to answer questions about his marital life or produce divorce papers that he had previously claimed he had filed. Instead, press reports at the time mention that he then threatened her with blackmail, probably after she threatened to confront his wife.
Yet another death in Versova was registered when Divya Bharati fell from her apartment and died. Diva Bharati went on to have commercial success with films like ‘Shola Aur Shabnam’ and ‘Deewana’ that same year, for which she garnered a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. Bharti died on 5 April 1993 at the age of 19 after falling from the balcony of her 5th storey apartment in Versova. Eyewitnesses were reported to have seen her slip down the parapet of her balcony after losing balance. Although the circumstances of her death still remains a mystery.
Last but not the least comes our very own Tollywood sweetheart Mahua Roychowdhury. As of reports, she was burnt to death. But how the incident happened remains a big mystery. Whether it was an accidentor suicide, the question remains to be answered.
Apart from these people, eminent music director Pulak Bandyopadhyay also chose to quit his life by jumping into the river Ganges. Theatre personality, Keya Chakraborty’s death also remains a dark phase in the cultural chapters of the intellectual as well as the glam world
