Ceasefire Violation In Poonch Kills 5 Civilians

Srinagar: Five civilians were killed after Pakistan resorted to cross-border heavy shelling in Jammu and Kashmir along the Line of Control in Poonch’s Balakote on Sunday.

All the five civilians killed in the firing were members of the same family, director general of police SP Vaid confirmed. The deceased have been identified as Choudhary Ramzan, his wife Malka Bi and their three sons.

As per reports, two girls were also injured in the Pakistani shelling across the border. Vaid tweeted that the injured had been shifted to a local hospital for further treatment. The Indian troops were retaliating appropriately and effectively in the ongoing gunfire, IANS reported.

The ceasefire violation comes at a time when the diplomatic standoff between the two countries have heightened. India on Sunday reportedly sent a note verbale on the subject to Pakistan, protesting against the intimidation and harassment of India High Commission officials. Significantly, this is India’s 12th note verbale to the neighbouring country on the subject this year.
