Jalpaiguri: Meat raids rolled in Coochbehar and Jalpaiguri on Tuesday, leading to the arrest of three persons for selling dead chicken and seizure of rotten meat from hotels.
In Cooch Behar, Mahadeb Mandal, Krishna Mandal and Rajeswar Roy were arrested from Kashiabari market of Haldibari, triggering panic that the problem of rotten chicken which began in Calcutta had spread to north Bengal.
Police and civic officials seized 19 dead chickens from the trio and a fridge in which the meat was stored. The dead chickens were sold in the Kashiabari market and to hotels in Jalpaiguri, Siliguri, Mainaguri and Coochbehar. Mahadeb has four chicken shops in Haldibari.
The three have been involved in such sales for a long time, the sources said. They were produced in the court of the sub-divisional judicial magistrate (SDJM) in Mekhligunj on Tuesday and remanded.
