Kolkata: A speeding car on Wednesday mowed an air force Corporal to death on Kolkata’s Red Road, after it struck a Republic Day drill held on the road.
As per reports, IAF Corporal Abhimanyu Gaud was killed on the spot after being hit by an Audi, said police. The driver of the car fled the spot leaving the car after being chased.
Kolkata police commissioner Surajeet Kar Purkayastha visited the spot and grieved the death of the jawan. An investigation has been launched in this matter. Purkayastha further said that the CCTV footage are being examined and they are in touch with IAF over the issue.
However, question has been raised on the security measures initiated for the drill as according to procedure the Red Road should have been blocked and no vehicles allowed during the drill.
The car seemed to have jump guard rails placed by police and the motive for doing so not yet clear. Police is not yet ruling out a possible sabotage attempt.
