Calcutta High Court Set For 3 New Judges


Kolkata: The Centre has approved three new judges by the Supreme Court collegium as judges of the Calcutta high court, pro formas were sent to them, said sources.

All three — Rabi Kapur, Shampa Sarkar and Arindam Mukherjee have been recommended for elevation. They have taken oath on Monday.Thus, the functional strength came down to 33. The situation has never looked up since. The Calcutta high court has an approved strength of 72 judges — 54 permanent and 18 additional judges.

The maximum number of judges the Calcutta high court had, in its 150-plus years of existence, was 50 on October 30, 2013. In between that date and October 22, 2014, when the last set of appointments was made, 12 judges retired and one Chief Justice was elevated to the Supreme Court.

However, the lawyers’ strike that has kept Calcutta High Court shut since February 19 was extended March 13 by the Bar Library Club and The Bar Association on Tuesday declared their protest since March 16.

The Bar Library Club represents 850 barristers. The Bar Association has more than 10,000 general advocates as its members while the Incorporate Law Society is made up of nearly 450 attorneys.
