Kolkata: Sovan Chatterjee, the former Mayor of Kolkata, shall have to pay for the education of his daughter Suhana even after the finalisation of the divorce with wife Ratna Chatterjee, Calcutta High Court has said on Friday.
Sovan and Ratna are engaged in a legal suit since November 2017 for divorce and the case is being heard at the Alipore court in the city.
The court had last month ruled that the former Mayor shall have to pay Rs 40,000 per month towards the education of daughter Suhana and, Rs 70,000 a month as alimony. Challenging this, Sovan moved the High Court.
Hearing the petition today, justice Sabyasachi Bhattacharya of the High Court, said that the former Mayor shall have to pay Rs 80,000 a month for the education of his teenage daughter who now stays with his estranged wife.
To this, Sovan pleaded that he is not in a position to pay such an amount every month. The judge then reduced the amount and said that the former Mayor shall have to pay Rs 40,000 a month.
