Bulgaria Bans The Burka

Sofia: Bulgaria has become the latest country to ban the burka and other Islamic veils covering the face in public, following pressure from nationalist politicians who claim that the clothing is a national security risk.

Legislation passed in Sofia yesterday was driven by the Patriotic Front coalition, whose co-leader Krasimir Karakachanov said that the burka was “more a uniform than a religious symbol”.

Mirroring laws passed in France, the Netherlands and Belgium in recent years, it bans clothing that conceals the face in government offices, schools, cultural institutions, and places of public recreation, sports and communications.
