New Delhi: Setting up a new mile stone, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is geared up to set up 40,000 Wi-Fi hotspots all over the country by investing about Rs 6,000 crore. The tender for the project will be mostly raised by July and setting of the Wi-Fi spots will be done by 2018.“BSNL will set up 40,000 wi-fi hot spots across the country and the project is likely to be completed by 2018,” Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said while launching Wi-Fi facility at Taj Mahal on Tuesday. Prasad also said the investment estimated for the project is around Rs 6,000 crore. Also, Wi-Fi facility has been provided at Taj Mahal by BSNL.
The company will also set up another 2,500 Wi-Fi hot spots at 250 locations by investing Rs 500 crore in 2015. BSNL CMD Anupam Srivastava said that of these 200 hot spots have already been set up. BSNL will provide free wi-fi services for 30 minutes per 24 hrs (three times in a month) which can be utilised the visitors in multiple sessions. However, after free usage of 30 minutes is over, visitors can continue using the Wi-Fi by going with subscription plans which are available in the denomination of Rs 20, Rs 30, Rs 50 and Rs 70 for validity of 30 min, 60 min, 120 min and one day, respectively.
Also, BSNL is planning to offer Wi-Fi to other tourist and religious places such as Khajuraho and Jagannath, among others by March 2016. Prasad also said that BSNL is planning to invest more than Rs 1,200 crores in UP (West) circle during 2015-16.
