Krishnagunj: The Border Security Force (BSF) seized nearly 9.7 kg silver close to the Indo-Bangladesh border at Krisnagunj in Nadia on Thursday. In the morning, troops of the 113Bn BSF posted at Border Outpost Halderpara received information about the possible smuggling of silver in their area of operation. A special operation was launched around 9.30 am and suspicious movement was spotted across the border fence.
“The miscreants approached the fence and threw some packages across towards the Indian side. They were challenged as they were on Indian territory (150 yards beyond the border fence in Indian territory) but they managed to flee before the troops could get through the gates in the fence. There were nine plastic packets in all wrapped in brown tape. They contained silver granules weighing nearly 9.7 kg. The white metal was valued at Rs 4,02,200,” a senior officer said.
The silver was handed over to the customs department in Banpur, Nadia. In 2016, apart from other items, the BSF (South Bengal Frontier) seized 51.045 kg silver valued at nearly Rs 14,99,989. Three Bangladeshi nationals and two Indians were apprehended in this connection.
