Kolkata: The locals have accused the authorities of not paying heed to their
regular complaints that there were structural problems in the Majerhat bridge. They
alleged that the bridge looked good from outside, but was weak from inside.

The bridge is the lifeline of the city as it connects Behala, Maheshtala to the
city. Hundreds of vehicles ply through the bridge everyday. The locals have accused
the authorities of major negligence on their part.

Mohammar Naji, a resident of Majerhat said, “This bridge was left unattended for
several days. A hole was there in the bridge. Several parts of the layer coal tar
also weared away. The local councillor was informed. It collapsed much before
anything could be done.

The citizens always live in fear after the Posta flyover collapse case in 2016. The
incident on Tuesday reminded them of the Posta incident. A governmental committee
was set-up to look after and renovate the different bridges of the city. But
accidents still could not be avoided. The PWD department is being blamed for its
negligence on the Majerhat bridge collapse.

A resident of Maheshtala comes to Kolkata everyday. According to this resident,
“Today’s event proves that the authorities still did not learn their lesson after
Posta. The government does nothing as it promises.”
