Kolkata: The state government has decided to demolish the Majherhat bridge and instead construct a new bridge in its place.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had asked chief secretary Malay Dey to submit a report on this issue. In the report, the chief secretary said clearly that there is no other way than demolishing it.
The chief secreatry have blamed the PWD department for their negligence due to which the bridge collapse. The report also blames partially the metro railways.
The state government plans to complete the construction of the new bridge within one year. Before that, the state wants to speak to the railways so that a level crossing can be made just beside the area of the incident, so that vehicles could cross. For this, the government is ready to provide any kind of financial help.
The Diamond harbour road connects south 24 parganas with Kolkata. The Majherhat
bridge lies just above it which is the entry point to the city.
Thousands of people use this bridge to come from south 24 parganas. Numerous bus and other vehicles also use this bridge.
As a result, traffic is causing a major problem. Alternative roads are being used. More alternative roads are being searched for.
