Chennai: DMK Chief Karunanidhi Passes Away. Five time chief minister passed away at the age of 94. He breathed his last at 6:10 pm. He died due to multiple organ failure after being under treatment for 11 days at the Kauvery hospital in Chennai.
Muthuvel Karunanidhi was the last of Tamil Nadu’s politicians with a colossal mass following. For decades, the state’s politics was dominated by the rivalry between its two towering figures – Jayaram Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi.
He was admitted to the hospital on July 28 after a dip in his blood pressure. He was initially critical but later on was stable.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday had expressed her concern
over the health condition of DMK chief M Karunanidhi, who was being treated for
fever due to an urinary tract infection.
Banerjee prayed for a quick recovery of the 94-year-old veteran politician of Tamil
Nadu. She has presently rushed to Chennai. Karunanidhi has been not keeping well since October 2016, and some days ago he had undergone a procedure to change his tracheostomy tube, provided to help in
Karunanidhi’s son and working president of DMK Stalin had on Wednesday said his
father was suffering from fever and doctors were providing medication and assured
the people that there was nothing to worry about the nonagenarian leader’s health.

The 94-year-old was admitted in hospital on July 28 after he contracted urinary tract infection. After a health scare days later, the doctors had advised a longer stay, citing “age related overall decline in his general health, altered liver function and haematological parameters”.
Since then, President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Venkiah Naidu and a number of political leaders across party lines – including Congress chief Rahul Gandhi, actor-politicians Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth — have visited him in the hospital.
Earlier on Monday, Mr Karunanidhi’s wife Dayalu Ammal visited him for the first time since he was hospitalised.
President Ram Nath Kovind had visited DMK president M Karunanidhi at the
hospital and briefly enquired about his health. He also interacted with his son and DMK working presudent M K Stalin and DMK MP Kanimozhi.
The official twitter account of Rashtrapati Bhavan said, “Visited Thiru M Karunanidhi in Chennai, met Kalaignar’s family members and doctors and inquired about his health. Wishing the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, a veteran of our public life, a quick recovery.”
A picture of the meet was also shared. Kovind was accompanied by Governor Banwarilal Purohit. However, he passed away on Tuesday.
