Kolkata: Sarodutsav or annual home coming of the Mother Goddess is no longer just a religious festival. It is a social festival, it is an industry.
Keeping the social perspective in mind, Forum For Durgotsav with 281 Durga Puja committee under its umbrella is organizing a massive blood donation camp on June 4 at Khudiram Anushilan Kendra. It is touted to be the biggest blood donation camp of Kolkata. “Ma er jonne roktodan’ is the catch line of the mega event.
Though it is true that the Forum’s foray into social work is not new. Earlier to combat the menace of dengue, they have worked in unison with Kolkata Municipal Corporation for spreading awareness about the killer disease. They have distributed woolen items to pedestrian dwellers during winter. On May 28, the Forum is organizing another awareness programme to sensitize people about the detrimental effects of smoking. The walk will start from Deshopriya Park.
It’s been seen that during summer months, there is always a crisis of blood in blood banks during summer days and after Durga Puja. “The camp that we are about to organise would keep the supply of blood in state run blood banks. This would help those who are in dire need of it,” said Saswata Basu, joint secretary of Forum of Durgostav.
The Forum aims at supplying more than 1,500 units of blood to various state run blood banks in and around Kolkata. Staffs of state run blood banks located at North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah and Hooghly would be present at the occasion.
Those who would donate blood would be gifted with VIP passes of 281 pujas from the Forum. Plus he will be gifted with a sapling as June 5 is celebrated as World Environment Day. “Those who serve people by donating blood are our true VIP,” said Somnath Das of Santoshpur Lakepalli Durga Puja Committee.
