Blast injures 2 on Mumbai-Goa highway


Update 02:30 pm: The Mumbai-Goa highway has now been reopened to the motorists after the major mishap which occurred in the Pen section of the road early Sunday.

At around 11.30 am, the traffic was moving very slowly between Pen and Kharpada toll plaza, as the multiple blasts fire was extinguished and the accident debris cleared.

Mumbai: A blast on the Mumbai-Goa highway killed two people and injured several others. The blast occurred when two trucks, one carrying LPG cylinders and other carrying steel rods, collided with each other early morning on Sunday.

According to the local police, the collision between two trucks resulted in blast of multiple LPG cylinders and one truck caught fire. The driver of the LPG truck is reported to have borne grievous burn injuries, while the other truck driver escaped with minor injuries. Others too sustained burn injuries.

The highway is shut since 5 am today. Raigad police officials informed that traffic has been diverted towards Khopoli as the Pen section of the road is now blocked. The exact mishap spot is near Hamra phata.
