Kolkata: Former TMC MLA Manju Basu has been finalized for the upcoming Legislative Assembly constituency polls in West Bengal’s Noapara.
Schedule for by-elections to fill the casual vacancy in the Lok Sabha from the Parliamentary Constituency and State Legislative Assemblies of Rajasthan and West Bengal will take place on January 29, the Election Commission had informed earlier.
Thus The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday released the names for the upcoming by-elections to the Parliamentary constituency and Legislative Assembly Constituency of Rajasthan and West Bengal.
Speculations of a major defection were set afoot when former TMC MLA Manju Basu met senior BJP leadership on Thursday evening. She met BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya and BJP leader Mukul Roy.
It was a significant meeting ahead of Noapara Assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas as she had been the MLA from there in 2011-2016. Talks about her defection had already been on and after last night’s meeting political experts said it was only a matter of time.
Fuelling the speculations, Mukul Roy had said on Thursday, “Not only one, all TMC MLAs are ready to join BJP. Reporters need to be patient. With time you will all see what unfolds.
“Sources said that after she was rejected party ticket for the forthcoming bye-polls at Noapara, 65-year-old Basu had expressed her willingness to join BJP to contest from there.
The by-election had been necessitated after the death of Madhusudan Ghosh, the Congress-CPI(M) alliance candidate who had won in 2016.
