Kolkata: Ahead of an all-party meeting on the Gorkhaland issue, state Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee on Sunday asked the BJP to clear its stand on it. While speaking to the media in West Midnapore, Mukherjee said, “Whenever you ask a BJP leader to clear his stand on Gorkhaland, he will never answer it. He will say other things but not comment on Gorkhaland. I want to ask the BJP to clear its stand on the issue. Leaders of the party should tell whether they want the division of Bengal.”

On Monday, the government will hold an all-party meeting at state secretariat Nabanna to discuss the Gorkhaland issue. Reacting to Mukherjee’s statements, state BJP president Dilip Ghosh said Gorkhaland was never on their agenda.

“We have no obligation to clear our stand. If he has the guts, then he should go to Darjeeling and openly say that they will not create a separate Gorkhaland. Has he ever gone there? Why is he giving provocation to the people there? A police officer was killed because of their petty politics. Now the state government is trying to get sympathy out of it. We have not demanded Gorkhaland and it is not on our agenda,” he said.

Later, Ghosh tweeted, “The ideologies of BJP and GJM are separate. We don’t support the acts of unnecessary violence made upon Bimal Gurung and team by state government. Subhash Ghisingh (former GNLF leader) did much more violence where more than 1,000 lost their lives but he is dear to the Chief Minister.”
