BJP Candidate Tied & Beaten In Mayureswar

Suri: A BJP gram panchayat candidate in Birbhum’s Mayureswar on Wednesday alleged that he was thrashed by Trinamool activists who tied him to an electric post and threatened to cut off his arms.

Maluk Kumar Basu, a farmer, said he was saved by some women but threatened with murder by the attackers if he did not withdraw his nomination. “I went to meet people affected by a Norwester and for a door-to-door campaign on Tuesday. Three Trinamool workers stopped me and asked why I was campaigning. Soon, one of them took out a rope and tied me to an electric post. I heard one of the Trinamool workers being told to bring a chopper and cut off my arms,” Basu, 60, said.

CPM district committee secretary Manasa Hansda said Left candidates were not being allowed to campaign. Local Trinamul MLA Abhijit Roy termed the claims “baseless”.

The district administration is being silent on the ruckus going on regarding the withdraw of nomination.
