Kolkata: A Biswa Bangla globe that was being fixed to the New Town gate on the main arterial road fell from a height of about 40 metres late on Saturday night. Work has been postponed till further orders.
The incident took place around 11pm on Saturday. Workers of the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco) were trying to pull up the globe and fix it to the middle of the gate. The globe was to hang from a height of 50 metres. The globe was pulled up to 40 metres with the help of a crane when the iron rope suddenly snapped and the globe fell on the ground. However, there was no report of any injury. Traffic in the area was diverted through another lane.
Senior Hidco officials visited the spot on Sunday. “A mechanical fault occurred in the pushing gear that led the globe to fall while the work was on. All precautionary measures were taken, including diversion of traffic and fencing of the spot while work was on at night. A report has been sought from the chief engineer. Work to fix the globe has been postponed till further orders,” said a senior Hidco official.
The New Town gate, which is a steel and tower structure, has been set up at the Rabindra Tirtha crossing of the main arterial road that has been named as Biswa Bangla Sarani. It will have a hanging restaurant with the Biswa Bangla globe.
