‘Bimal Gurung Linked With Maoists & Other Insurgent Groups’

Darjeeling: The Additional Director General (law & order) of the state police, Anuj Sharma, has stated that police has information about the supremo of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, Bimal Gurung, being linked with the Maoists and other North Eastern insurgent groups. The ADG also said that Bimal Gurung is believed to purchase weapons from these rebel groups.

In connection to the attack on the police in Darjeeling last night, ADG Anuj Sharma said that they had received a tip-off that Bimal Gurung was planning to sneak into Darjeeling from the neighbouring state of Sikkim. He said that the police officials were attacked by Gurung’s supporters when they went to raid the area in search of the GJM Chief.

The ADG also said that half a dozen of AK-47 rifles were recovered from a factory near the place where the clash between the police and Gurung’s supporters took place. Moreover, 9 mm pistols and 500 rounds of cartridges were also found in the same factory.

ADG Anuj Sharma also said that the attempts to disturb the hills’ peace will go in vain since the police is determined to stop the miscreants who would do so, even if it would mean that the lives of the police officials would have to be sacrificed.

Last night, the police had conducted a raid in the Nimbu Basti area of Darjeeling to catch Bimal Gurung. They had to face a horde of Gurung’s supporters, who fired at the police and managed to kill Sub Inspector Amitabh Mullick along with injuring two other officials.
