Bihar Govt Tabled New Liquor Amendment Law


Patna: The Bihar Government on Monday passed an amendment law on liquor prohibition in the the state assembly. The new Liquor Amendments Bill was tabled by Nitish Kumar-led government.

While speaking on the new liquor bill in Bihar assembly, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said, “Liquor ban was introduced for the poor people. they were wasting a major part of their income in buying alcohol. Domestic violence was high. I did this for betterment of poor.”Over 39,000 people have been arrested for liquor consumption, said Nitish Kumar.

The Bihar Excise (Amendment) Act that came into force on April 1, 2016, has restricted the manufacture, transport, sale and consumption of liquor in Bihar and with effective implementation the state was declared dry on April 6 itself. But recently witnessed deaths of four persons in Begusarai district.

The penal provisions in the Act are stringent as there is a large fine as well as a large jail sentence for anyone caught violating the laws.

Earlier , the state government has written a letter to the Centre requesting it to notify khaini as a food product. Once it has been notified as a food product by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the government will have the power to impose a ban on it on health grounds.
