Bhadreshwar Jetty Collapse: Death Toll Rises To 5, 4 Ijaradars Arrested


Hooghly: Police recovered two more missing bodies from Ganga river on Thursday morning, taking the death toll in the jetty collapse accident Hooghly’s Bhadreshwar to 5.

Search operations are on for the missing passengers.

Four leased ghat workers or ‘Ijaradars’ of Telenipara Ghat has been nabbed by police and will be produced in Chandannagar court. Murder complaint has been lodged against Ijaradar Krishna Prasad Sinha.

National Disaster Response Force had been conducting the rescue operations since Wednesday. 7 rescued passengers are recuperating in a critical state.

Two dead and 60 others went missing when a makeshift jetty in the Hooghly river collapsed on Wednesday under the impact of high tide at a place in Bhadreswar.

SP Sukesh Jain said locals who swung into action in small boats traced 18 of the missing persons. After they were taken to Chandannagar sub divisional hospital, three of them including two women, were declared “brought dead.”

The accident occurred when the passengers bound for Shyamnagar in North 24 Parganas district were waiting at the 150-feet high bamboo jetty at Telinipara for boarding a launch to cross the river.
