Kolkata: Mango is designated as king of fruits because it is reigning the hearts of people since long through its various attributes including heat beater, remedial measures, taste, ingredient to various other yummy recipes like the pickle, mango salsa, mango desserts, mango cupcakes and much more.
The ‘Bengal Mango Utsav – 2018’ began on Friday the state’s mango and mango products and also to explore possibilities for their export to the Middle East, Europe and South East Asian countries.
The West Bengal government has initiated talks to get markets in United Kingdom, Italy, France and other countries with the best of mangoes that are produced in West Bengal.
The three-day mango utsav is being organised by the State’s Food Processing Industries and Horticulture department in association with the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC).
West Bengal has different varities of mangoes. However, we need to market them well to get better price. Exhibition and sale of different varieties of mango and mango products by the growers and producers from all across state are in display at the utsav.
Agriculture, Horticulture and Food Processing Industries Secretary Nandini Chakravorty said representatives from eight countries directly communicated with the farmers from different districts. She also informed that West Bengal produces 400 varieties of mangoes out of which 100 varieties are available in Bengal Mango Utsav.
From June onwards, mango varieties like Himsagar, Lyangra, Fazli, Laxmanbhog and others are going to be exported to Europe. According to agicultural experts, production of mango this summer is expected to cross 400 metric tonnes.
Since most of the mangoes to be exported will come from Malda district the packaging houses and fruit treatment facilities are also being built there.
Modern packaging houses are being built by the state government where fruits will be packed according to international standards. Special hot water plants are also being built to treat the fruits.
