After coming to power in 2011, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had started the tradition of honouring teachers on the occasion of Teachers’ Day. Chatterjee said teachers should also record 75 per cent attendance in educational institutes. He asked authorities to be lenient while transferring lady teachers as they should not be sent to postings at places very far away from her house.

In another function, the Lions Club of Kolkata, Mother Teresa Sarani, organised ‘Gurukul Awards’ for students, teachers and private coaching institutes.
