Bengal cricketer Rahul Ghosh is now stable

Kolkata: The Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government on Wednesday assured all assistance to injured cricketer Rahul Ghosh, who continues to be in a stable condition but not out of danger yet.

A day after the tragic demise of former Bengal Under-19 captain Ankit Keshri due to an on-field injury, Ghosh was on Tuesday rushed to the Nightingale Hospital in central Kolkata after he got injured while fielding during a Cricket Association of Bengal’s (CAB) second division league match between his team Kolkata Police and Vijay Sports.

State Youth Affairs Minister Aroop Biswas paid a visit to Ghosh, assuring government assistance.

“The chief minister (Mamata Banerjee) is very anxious and concerned about Ghosh’s health. She has said that the state government will provide all kind of assistance to the family to ensure his fully recovery,” said Biswas.

“We have asked the hospital authorities to ensure the best of treatment to Ghosh and not to worry about any kind of expenses.”

The cricketer’s father earlier said Ghosh’s condition was stable but he was not yet out of danger.

“The doctors said his condition is stable, though he is not yet out of danger. They said they will conduct some medical examinations on him, to ascertain if he requires a surgery,” Amitabha Ghosh said on Wednesday.

Approaching 20, Ghosh was injured on the left side of his head after being hit by a ball. The CAB too has extended assistance to the Ghosh family. Treasurer Biswarup Dey, during his visit to the hospital on Tuesday, assured that the CAB will bear all expenses for Ghosh’s treatment.

The cricket world plunged into gloom on Monday after Keshri, regarded as a bright future prospect, succumbed to a head injury sustained during a CAB senior knockout tournament game last Friday.

The 20-year-old Keshri — turning out for his club East Bengal against Bhowanipore — got injured and fell unconscious following an on-field collision with fellow fielder Sourav Mondal while taking a catch.

He passed away in the same hospital early on Monday following cardiac arrest. His bereaved family has alleged “medical negligence”.
