Siliguri: Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee will meet her Sikkim counterpart Pawan Kumar Chamling in Siliguri on Friday. It seems Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee wants to improve relations with Sikkim. One of the prime reasons is the sizeable Gorkha population in Sikkim.
From trade to tourism, Sikkim- Bengal are inter- dependant. If Sikkim and Bengal can work together for tourism, it will benefit stakeholders in both states. As the two states have been an integrated tourist circuit, if the current issues over commercial vehicles not resolved, the summer tourist season may effect.
“Day after tomorrow, I will have a one on one meeting with the Sikkim Chief Minister. We will discuss about Darjeeling’s development. We may discuss about peace, prosperity and everything. I think we can work together for the interest of Darjeeling, for the interest of the country,” said Banerjee on the concluding day of the Hill Business Summit in Darjeeling.
The relations between the governments of the two states have deteriorated over the Gorkhaland agitation. The meeting is significant because of the issues such as recent problems in the movement of commercial vehicles stemming from tighter checks, trade and tourism – sectors.
