New Delhi: Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani has been accused of ignoring the plight of accident victims on the Yamuna Expressway following a pile-up there.
An Agra-based doctor, Ramesh Nagar, was killed after his motorcycle was hit by a car in Irani’s convoy on the expressway.
An FIR registered in connection with the accident that had led to the vehicle pile-up also mentions Irani’s cavalcade.
While the rider was killed on the spot, two children riding pillion on the bike were injured.
As per reports, the family alleged that the children – Nagar’s daughter and nephew – could get proper medical attention only after seven hours.
The victim’s daughter told ANI today, “Smriti Irani’s convoy rammed into our motorcycle. She came out and I begged her for help but she left.”
Nagar’s son Abhishek told the news agency, “My sister literally pleaded with folded hands to Smriti Irani for help, but she did not stop.”
Abhishek, who had filed the FIR, had earlier said that the minister did not help the victims and her car moved away.
The children were taken to the hospital by the police, Abhishek added.
Irani had tweeted after the accident, “For all enquiring re (garding) my accident – I’m fine. Thank you for the concern and wishes.”
“There was a pile-up of vehicles due to an accident on the expressway. Unfortunately, the police vehicle before mine and my car also crashed…Tried to help the injured who were lying on the road for quite some time and ensured they reach a hospital. Pray for their safety,” the minister had tweeted.
An HRD Ministry spokesperson today denied that the motorcycle was hit by the minister’s convoy.
“A private vehicle, which allegedly hit the biker, who later on died, has nothing to do with HRD Minister’s cavalcade,” the spokesperson said.
“HRD Minister directed SSP Mathura to arrange ambulance immediately so injured could be given medical treatment at the earliest,” the ministry official added.
“A speeding car with registration number (DL 3C BA 5315), which was part of the cavalcade of HRD minister Smriti Irani, hit a motorbike from behind on which Dr Ramesh Nagar and two children were going for a wedding party,” states the FIR.
As per the FIR, the driver of the car fled after the accident.
Irani was returning to Delhi from Vrindavan after attending a BJYM event.
