Update: A woman’s body has been found which was afloat at Balagar. Rescuers of the Disaster Management Group, civil defence and private divers have been pressed into service to find the missing people. The authorities have arranged for proper lights to help with the rescue operation. 50 members of the NDRF team has already reached the spot and are presently working on their rescue operations. Speed boats and cranes are being used to speed up the process.
Update: Situation remains tense as locals continues to stage protest at Shantipur Ghat at Nadia, amid violence. The DM and SP of Bardhaman reached the spot. Although rescue work is going on, no missing person has been traced yet.
On the other hand, violent clashes between agitated mob and police injures a constable an ASI of Shantipur police station. RAF has been deployed in the area.
Update: Situation turn violent as angry mob set fire to a number of trollers and boat accusing authorities of lethargic approach initiating rescue works. Huge police force has been deployed in the area and lathicharge was also ordered after a violent mob attacked a police team injuring an ASI named Mohammad Illiyas, of Shantipur police station. The injured cop has been rushed to Shantipur hospital.
Despite authorities claim that 4 to five people are missing the locals said that over 70 to 80 people are missing. The mob also attacked SDPO of Ranaghat. Police also fired rubber bullets and tear gas shells to disperse the mob. RAF has been deployed in the area and NDRF teams are on the site.
The agitated people accused that despite more than 10 hours have passed the authorities failed to rescue even a single person.
On the other hand, Kalna municipality official said that rescue works are going on and police along with rescue teams are conducting search for the missing person. The official further said that 4 to 5 people are missing against the claims of 70 to 80 people claimed by witnesses.
Rescuers have traced the boat which sank on the wee hours of Sunday.
Kalna: At least Five people went missing after a boat full of passengers capsized in Ganga, near Kalna jetty in West Bengal’s Bardhaman district on the wee hours of Sunday, said officials.
As per reports, the boat going to Shantipur from Kalna was overcrowded and capsized as it failed to carry the load. Although most of the people were rescued, 5 went missing .
A search operation has been launched by authorities and divers placed in action to trace the missing people. A passenger whose 6-year-old girl is among the missing said, “the boat was too crowded and it just sank, my child is still missing.”
Anger seems to be brewing among the people who accused the authorities of a lack luster approach towards the rescue of the victims. Angry people also torched a few boats after the incident. Ferry services between Kalna and Shantipur has been suspended following the accident.
