Baruipur: The West Bengal government has decided to relocate three key correctional homes from Kolkata to adjoining districts due to “security reasons”.
A modern, state-of-the-art correctional home with international standards is coming up at Tangtala in the Baruipur block of South 24 Parganas district. Inmates of Alipore Correctional Home will be shifted to this facility.
It has already given the go ahead to shift the Alipore Central Correctional Home to Baruipur in South 24 Parganas district, and is planning to relocate Presidency Correctional Home and Alipore Women’s Correctional Home as well.
The home will have cells with modern facilities and procedures. The cells will have iron bars in front so that the entire room can be seen from the outside. More than 1,000 inmates will be housed in these cells.Spread over a few acres, the proposed home consists of a couple of large white buildings, which will be equipped with modern technology in every aspect required for such homes.
A high wall will surround the complex, with watchtowers and CCTV cameras. Laser technology will also be used for security.
Several recreational and sports facilities will be built at the home. A playing field, a gym, a vocational training centre, a hospital, a kitchen as well as a modern auditorium for cultural programmes are being built at the correctional home.
The State government is keen on relocating the Alipore Central Correctional Home to Baruipur by June 2018. The Alipore Central Correctional Home has a registered capacity of 1,971 inmates.
