Kolkata, Kaushik Sinha: Security agencies have beefed up surveillance and is carrying out a search operation around Kolkata after intelligence input confirmed that terrorists involved in the killing of foreign nationals in Bangladesh are hiding in Kolkata.
According to a report submitted to Kolkata Police by their Bangladeshi counterpart, the suspects are believed to have crossed the international border into India in a bid to avoid arrest.
Following the report a Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata police on Friday night conducted a series of raid across the city.
However declining to comment, Kolkata Police Commissioner Surajit Kar Purakayastha said, “An important operation is going on and it is not feasible to furnish the details right now.”
On September 29 an Italian aid worker, Cesare Tavella, 50, was shot and the killing was claimed by dreaded terror outfit Islamic State (ISIS). On October 3, Hoshi Kunio, a 66 years old Japanese citizen was shot in Bangladesh’s Rangpur.
Despite the killings were claimed by ISIS, Bangladeshi investigating agencies have junked the claims and accused The Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) a militant group of carrying out the attacks.
Ansarullah Bangla is the same group which claimed responsibility for the killing of secular blogger Abhijeet Roy, Ananta Bijoy Das, Niloy Neel, Wasiqur Rehman and Faisal Arefin Dipon.
An Intelligence Bureau (IB) official said that Bangladeshi agencies have shared concrete intelligence report, based on which the operation in Kolkata is going on. Bangladesh has recently witnessed a massive surge of attacks on secular authors and writers.
