Vienna: An explosion rocked Austria’s main gas pipeline hub at Baumgarten east of Vienna on Tuesday, police said, with several media reports saying one person died and 60 people were hurt. A large number of people are also reportedly missing.
The Kronen-Zeitung daily reported on its website that 60 people were hurt and that several fire brigades from the surrounding area were called in.
There was no immediate word on what caused the blast at the major plant in Baumgarten, where pipelines connect and gas is compressed.
The Baumgarten gas hub is Austria’s largest reception point and the main distribution hub for natural gas imports from Russia, Norway and other countries.
Several fire brigades from the surrounding area were called in to help. The Baumgarten gas hub receives some 40 billion cubic metres of gas annually and redistributes it elsewhere in Europe including to Germany and northern Italy.
