Atalji’s Office In Tilottama Turned Into Warehouse

Sekhar Dubey, Kolkata: From the year 1951 to 1954, during the establishment of ‘Bharatiya Janasangha’, Former Prime Minister Sri Atalbihari Vajpayee was the close associate of Shyamaprasad Mukhopadhyay. At that time, Atal-ji used to sit and work as a consigliere of Shayamaprasad Mukhopadhyay at a room in the latter’s house in Kolkata.

The room at Jadubabu market where-from Atal ji commenced his political career is now transformed into a store room. Old placards, broken chairs, tables and such useless things occupy the room now.

On 11th May of 1953 Shyamaprasad set out on a journey from Delhi to Pathankot by train and he was accompanied by Atal ji, his beloved disciple. As soon as he entered Jammu and Kashmir, the police force of Shekh Abdullah arrested him. He did not support the ‘Kashmir-niti’ of Nehru and was ready to accompany Shyamaprasad even in Kashmir. But Shyamaprasad directed him to go back to the India and tell the countrymen that Shyamaprasad had entered Jammu and Kashmir without consent. Atal ji did as his ‘guru’ told him.

After that several years passed. In 1977 Atalbihari Vajpayee worked as Foreign Minister in the Janata party of Morarji Desai. He was elected as the Prime Minister of India for the first time in his life in 1996, but only for 13 days. He returned to that chair in 1998 and this time held it till 1999. In the year 1999 he took oath as the Prime Minister for the third time as well as for the last. Last time he could sit on his chair for 5 complete years till 2004. After that NDA was unable to have maximum votes.

Atal ji took retirement from politics in 2005. He was awarded ‘Bharatratna’, the highest civilian award of India in 2015. The former Prime Minister of India breathed his last at 5:05 on Thursday at the age of 93 in AIMS, Delhi.

The office of this illustrious son of India is now turned into a store room. No party has given a fig to take care of the memory of the endearing student of Shyamaprasad babu at his own house.

The honourable Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee paid a visit to Atal ji in the latter’s deathbed. But even the state government has taken no step to preserve the memory of Vajpayee ji in proper Kolkata. And surprisingly enough, The Bengal BJP is also quite indifferent to this issue.
