New York: After the discovery of Asteroid 316201, Nasa has named the asteroid after Youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousufzai. Amy Mainzer had the right to name the object under the rules established by the International Astronomical Union. So she chose to name the asteroid after Malala.
316201 Malala (2010 ML48), is an asteroid in the Main Belt between Mars and Jupiter. The object is about 2.5 miles (4km) in diameter and features an extremely dark surface, one resembling the color of printer toner. It completes a full orbit once every 5.5 years.
Malala Yousafzai, who is only 17, is a Pakistani activist for female education. She was shot by the Talibans in 2012 for her activities. Since then, her advocacy has grown into a global movement.
