Assam Govt Declares NRC Draft List, 4 Million Left Out

Guwahati: The Assam government released a complete draft of the updated National
Register of Citizens on Monday.

However, 28.9 million people were found eligible out of 32.9 million. 4 million people do not find a mention in final draft of NRC. The NRC has been updated for the first time since 1951 in order to track the illegal migration into Assam from neighbouring Bangladesh.

The officials have asserted that this is only a draft and not the final NRC. ‘Ample opportunities will be given to all for claims and objections from July 30.

The centre has sent extra troops to maintain order in the state, hence strengthening the security.

“Every person who’s name is not there in this draft will have ample opportunity for filing claim; no genuine Indian citizen should have any fear or panic. Today’s list is a NRC draft and should be treated like one; nobody will be taken to Foreigners’ Tribunal or detention centre on the basis of this draft,” said the Joint Secretary, NE.

According to the Registrar General of India, “Reassure those not in draft, they will get ample opportunity to file claims and objectives with adequate time. People who lack knowledge will be provided assistance. Full justice will be meted to all.”
