Guwahati: After months of speculation Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said his would formally join BJP post his meeting with BJP chief Amit Shah.
Once a Gogoi loyalist, Sarma is credited with several victories for the congress and is known as a master political strategist. Relations turned sour between Tarun Gogoi and Sharma, after the former led a rebel section against Tarun Gogoi and approached AICC cheif Sonia Gandhi. As per reports Himanta may scoop out 15 Congress MLAs with him and join BJP.
“Following massive calls over the past months from people across Assam hailing from all communities, will be formally joining the BJP ( Bharatiya Janata Party) for A Resurgent Assam and Northeast under the vibrant leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji (sic),” Sarma wrote on facebook on Sunday.
This comes days after BJP parliamentary board called him the key suspect in the Louis Berger scam. The Central Bureau of Investigation probing the multi-crore chit fund scam has already grilled Sarma on the basis of the purported letter by Saradha supremo Sudipto Sen.
As Congress is bracing for a bigger split in Assam, the party has served a show-cause notice to Himanta Biswa Sharma. Speculations are that he may join BJP today.
