Assam an Oasis of Peace: Tarun Gogoi

Guwahati: Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said the celebrations of Durga Puja festivity by the people of the State with unbounded joy, cheerfulness and enthusiasm late into the night is a clear indication that the law and order situation has changed drastically in the past 14 years ushering in peace, progress and prosperity.

In a statement here today, Chief Minister Gogoi said that the State has come a long way from the abyss of darkness to brightness, from despair to hope when the present Government took over the reins of power in May 2001.

“The present Government assumed power at a time when law and order had totally collapsed with development activities coming to a grinding halt. There was fear psychosis all around with people fearing to venture out of homes at dusk. Employees had to go without salaries for months together. But today the situation has changed drastically following a slew of development initiatives backed by a strong urgency to instill confidence in the minds of the people by bringing back peace that eluded for many years.”

Gogoi said though the State is marching ahead on the path of peace, progress and prosperity, it has still miles to go. “There is no doubt whatsoever that the State has made remarkable progress on various fronts during the past 14 years. We have never been complacent with our efforts and always worked with zeal to achieve the maximum possible. We will speed up the progress in those sectors in which the State is lagging behind. Our aim is to make Assam one of the leading States of the country. In our tryst with development, we hope to get the continued love and affection, support and cooperation from the people in the coming days,” he said.

The Chief Minister hoped that the spirit of Durga Puja would help to annihilate all the evil forces vis-a-vis malice, ill-will, intolerance and hatred thus bringing an end to all types of violence and atrocities. “May the blessings of Goddess Durga and the ideologies of Srimanta Sankaradeva, Madhabdeva and Ajan Fakir be our guiding light to take the State along the high road of glory and prosperity and make it an oasis of peace,” he added
