Asansol: The Mayor of Asansol Municipal Corporation has refused to give permission to Union Minister Babul Supriyo to hold Sansad Mela at a local ground in his parliamentary constituency here. The mela (fair) was intially supposed to begin from January 12.
Mayor Jitendra Tiwary denied permission for holding the Sansad Mela, alleging deficiencies and shortcoming in the application filed by the organiser.
The proposed Sansad Mela was an initiative taken by Supriyo at the divisional railway stadium (Loco ground) of Asansol.
Tiwary said, “Permission for the Sansad Mela at Loco Ground has been denied as a huge crowd is expected to turn up to see Bollywood singer Supriyo. Letting the event go on may lead to a stampade as the entire ground on its boundaries has walls as enclosures.”
Tiwary said that Babul was a star himself. Lakhs of people could come for his rally, putting their lives at risk given the limited ground space available.
The mayor suggested that the Sansad Mela could be shifted to another venue where there was greater space for the crowd to assemble.
Local authorities in Asansol are of the view that they will not have any problem in conducting the event. They have offered whatever help the organisers need to ensure the fair is conducted smoothly.
The Calcutta High Court had on Tuesday instructed the Asansol Municipal Corporation to set aside politics and work for the benefit of the people. “Hence, work within the legal framework and consider the Sansad Mela application anew”, the court had said.
