Army Conduct Joint Exercises Myanmar Maldives

New Delhi: Defence experts and senior Armed Forces veterans said that China was making a conscious effort to increase its military engagement with Myanmar for last the few years, which has become a worrisome factor for India.

Amid in this tension, Indian Army again will show their strength in World. The Indian Army is all set to conduct joint exercises with two South East Asian countries Myanmar and Maldives in the coming months, a top Army officer told TOI on Tuesday.

“The exercises will either be conducted in Pune or in Belgaum in the coming months. The location is yet to be finalised,” the officer said. The exercises will provide opportunity to foster jointmanship and interoperability between the defence forces of the countries, the Army officer added.

A senior Army officer, who has served extensively in the northeast region, told TOI over phone: “One must understand the importance of Myanmar as it shares 1,624-km border with India’s northeast states. Also, many insurgent groups, which are actively engaged in anti-national activities, are holed up in Myanmar. As a result, developing cordial relations with Myanmar is of paramount importance for India.”

Army sources said forces share their expertise in drills and practices while tackling insurgency and terrorism, thereby promoting healthy military to military relations between the armies and developing joint strategies for conducting operations in a counter terrorism environment.

A senior Army veteran, who retired in 2016 and served extensively in the northeast, said, “India should not ignore China’s upgradation of radar and naval facilities in Myanmar. Considering all these aspects, India should focus on Myanmar closely.”
