Another Bangladesh Publisher Receives Death Threat


Dhaka: Just a day after liberal publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan was brutally hacked to death, another publisher Farid Ahmed, who runs ‘Somoy Prakashan’ received death threat from radical Islamic elements on Sunday.

Farid said that he received a sms which read, “You have published a lots of books by atheists. You are a sinner. Prepare yourself for death.” The sms was sent by a radical group called Al-Ahrar UK.
Farid said he had promptly informed the police.

Publisher Ahmedur Rashid Chowdhury Tutul of ‘Suddhaswar’ and two others were hacked by unknown assailants at his office in Dhaka on Saturday. Within hours of the attack, publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan, who ran ‘Jagriti Prokashony’, was found murdered in his office in Dhaka.

Dipan was hacked to death at his publishing house at Shahbagh’s Aziz Supermarket– a hub of writers and publishers in Dhaka. Tutul and Dipan, both were close to slain writer-blogger Avijit Roy, and had published his titles.

Roy was murdered on the Dhaka University Campus during the Amar Ekushe Book Fair in February this year.
