Riyadh: Former world champion, Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand stunned reigning champion and World no. 1 Magnus Carlsen in Riyadh World Rapids on Thursday. Anand won the contest in 34 moves playing from the black side.
The former World Number 1 played the contest with black pieces and started off on an aggressive note which caught Carlsen off guard. Before taking on Carlsen, Anand drew against Vladimir Fedoseev and is currently in the lead with Vladimir Kramnik and Wang Hao.
With this win, Anand has extracted a sweet revenge of 2013 World Cup loss to Carlsen. Anand remains unbeaten in the tournament after winning his ninth round-up match. He has won five of them and drawn four.
This win would gave Anand much needed confidence and end the year on a high which has been an underwhelming year for former world champion from India.
