Amitava Roy sworn in as Supreme Court judge


New Delhi: Justice Amitava Roy was sworn in as a judge of Supreme Court on Friday. Roy was earlier the Chief Justice of Orissa High Court. With the inclusion of Roy, the total strength of Judges in the Apex court has gone up to twenty nine. Although the Supreme Court has a sanctioned strength of thirty one. Roy will have a tenure of three year.

The government moved fast after the Presidential approval of Roy’s elevation was received. Union Law Minister V. Sadananda Gowda said “We had moved fast as Justice Roy was due to retire on February 28. The Prime Minister’s approval was got and the file sent to the President two days ago.”
