Alipore Central Jail Convicts To Get New Place Of Stay


Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will inaugurate a newly constructed jail at South 24 Parganas’ Baruipur’s Tangtala on Wednesday. She will inaugurate using a remote control from Nabanna. At the same time, the Narendrapur police station of Kamalgaji and Bakultala police station of Jaynagar will also be inaugurated. At the time of inauguration, jail minister Ujjal Biswas will be present.

The minister said, “The Baruipur jail will be inaugurated on Wednesday at around 3:30 pm. Hence, the convicts of the Alipore Central Jail will get a new place. On Wednesday, 50 convicts of the Alipore jail will be transferred to the newly-constructed modern correcting home of Baruipur. The rest will be slowly transferred.”

Those convicts from Alipore jail, who has received long sentence will be kept here. According to the jail department, this correcting home has been set on almost 17 acres of land. The height of the Alipore Central jail’s walls are 6.5 metres. Baruipur’s jail walls height is 7.5 metres.

CCTV cameras have been set-up in the jail and continuous monitoring will be done through these CCTV cameras so that there are no cases of escapes.

Alipore Central jail can accomodate 1800 convicts. But Baruipur jail can accomodate 2200 convicts. Just like alipore jail, this jail will also have ward and cell. For the convicts, there will be modern gym, yoga, places for playing football, volleyball, badminton and a modern garden.

Apart from these, there will be Technical Training Center, workshop, library and an auditorium. The security system is also strict.
