New Delhi: A rape case was registered against self-styled godman Daati Maharaj in the national capital on Monday.
According to police sources of news agency ANI, the case was registered in Fatehpur Beri on Sunday. It was later transferred to District Investigation Unit (DIU). Daati Maharaj has been booked under Indian Penal Code, sections – 376, 377, 354 and 34.
The woman said that she didn’t file a police complaint earlier due to fear and social stigma. She said that she was intimidated by the huge following of the Shani Dham head. According to reports, he has been accused of sexual assault in the past too.
Daati Maharaj is a popular face on Indian television as he anchors horoscope based shows on several news channels. He is also popular in political circles with several politicians seen with him.
This comes months after another self styled godman Asaram was convicted of raping his disciple in his ashram. Asaram has been posted in a Jodhpur prison. He has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
Another report on Times Now stated, “the woman disciple has alleged that she was sexually assaulted inside Shani Dham two years ago. Because of fear and social stigma, the victim did not file a complaint earlier.” The self-styled godman has a huge following in Delhi-NCR an other parts of North India.
Earlier, a 21-year-old law student from Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur district was allegedly raped by a self-styled godman based in Rajasthan, police said on Wednesday.
Based on the woman’s complaint, a case was lodged against 70-year-old Swami Kaushlendra Prapannachari Falahari Maharaj with the women police station on 11 September, said Bilaspur Additional Superintendent of Police Archana Jha.
During the night, the baba called the woman in his room and allegedly sexually assaulted her and then the baba asked her not to tell anyone about the incident and threatened to harm her if she did so, she said.
