After Failing To Make Loan Waiver Cut, Farmer Commits Suicide

Bhopal: The announcement of a loan waiver by Chief Minister Kamal Nath in Madhya Pradesh, it seems, has failed to put a dent in farmer suicides in the state. A farmer Juan Singh, 45, father of Gulab Singh, committed suicide by hanging at his farm in MP’s Khandwa.

Juan Singh had taken a loan worth Rs 3 lakh from a bank and failed to qualify for the waiver. CM Kamal Nath after assuming power made the announcement to give relief to over 35 lakh farmers (by state government estimates) for loans upto Rs 2 lakh procured from national and co-operative banks before March 31, 2018. Singh failed to made the cut as he had taken the loan of Rs 3 lakh on March 31.

The development comes just two days after former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan criticised the Congress government’s move in the state for setting a cut-off date for the waiver.

Congress has done gross injustice by setting the cut-off date at March 31, 2018, to avail the scheme, Chouhan had tweeted. “They should refrain from such cheating and they should know that I am not asleep but awake and keeping a hawk’s eye on them,” he tweeted.
