Kolkata: The BJP students wing ABVP conducted a rally protesting against the Darivit High School students death by police firing in Islampur on Saturday morning in Shyambazar. The student movement in this school of Islampur has claimed two lives and many are severely injured. Centering the issue several protest rally were observed in different parts of the state.
Reportedly, in Islampur area of Northern Dinajpur the students of Darivit High School were agitating against the newly recruited teacher for Urdu subject, demanding teachers’ recruitment for other subjects. The agitation had begun since Monday but on Thursday when the students prevented the new teacher from entering the school, police escorted the teacher. Immediately, the students clashed with the police. In retaliation, the police reportedly fired tear gas shells and resorted to a lathi-charge. This clash resulted in the death of one student. The school authorities appointed Urdu teachers to the school. However, there is no demand for Urdu in the schools. Instead of teachers for Bengali and science which was required more.
The complainant said that the headmaster didn’t paid any heed to it when the matter was reported to him. On Thursday they protested and blocked the roads near the school. When the police came to deal with the situation, a clash started between them. Immediately the area turned into a battlefield. Students faced bullets. One student died at the spot. The other died in North Bengal Medical College Hospital on Friday morning shot and others were injured.
